For toddlers, the hardest work they do is play, and all their skills are learned through toys and games. NHELC believes in a hands-on approach to learning, through experimentation and exploration. The toddler care classrooms provide a theme based space, learning centers, and a variety of learning materials. Self-help skills are developed, including graduating from a sippy cup to a regular cup, letting go of the pacifier, using forks and spoons, table manners, and learning to use the bathroom. Assistance with potty training is provided in partnership with parents.Toddlers are encouraged to sing songs, repeat nursery rhymes and expand their vocabulary.

This program builds on the fine and gross motor skills being developed during the first two years allowing for exploration and play in a safe, responsive setting. To facilitate parental involvement, teachers provide daily sheets to document and share your child's experiences. Daily reports are provided to keep you informed about your child’s development.

Our teachers strive to encourage your child to gain their independence and help them to understand how their actions affect those around them. Providing constant feedback and encouragement creates a child who is excited about learning. These two classrooms allow for child-choice and self-directed play, small groups and circle-time with the whole group. Each learning area is equipped and arranged in a manner appropriate for the age of the children. The toddler curriculum is theme based and covers Language Arts, Number Concepts, Arts and Crafts, and Fine and Gross Motor Skills.
